Why this directory exists

When Storm Éowyn crossed Ireland in January 2025, 750,000+ premises lost power in Ireland, and generators sold out nationally and installer deposits stretched to months. Ireland's Atlantic storm cycle makes multi-day outages a recurring planning problem, not a once-in-a-generation event. This directory collects the sizing, cost, installation and maintenance information Irish households need before they commit to a standby set — county by county, with the storm-exposure context that explains why the west of Ireland takes this seriously.

Every page is independent: we do not install generators, we are not affiliated with ESB Networks or RECI, and we take no bookings. Electrical connection work must be carried out by a RECI-registered electrical contractor — that is the law of safe isolation and certification, not our preference.

Questions Irish households actually ask

How much should it cost to install a home generator?

For a permanently installed standby generator with an automatic transfer switch in Ireland, the indicative 2026 planning band is EUR 5,000-15,000+ installed (ASSUMPTION - installer quotes vary with unit size, fuel and switchgear). Portable units cost a few hundred euro but do not run automatically and cannot safely power hardwired circuits without a RECI-registered electrician fitting a changeover.

What is the 80% rule for generators?

A generator should not be run continuously at more than about 80% of its rated output. You size the unit so that your expected continuous load sits under 80% of its rating, leaving headroom for motor start-up surges (well pumps, heat pumps, oil burners) without tripping or stalling.

What size generator do I need to power my house in Ireland?

A typical Irish house with oil or gas heating and standard appliances usually lands around 7-13 kVA for whole-home standby (indicative methodology, not a quote). Rural homes with a well pump, homes with electric heating or a heat pump, and homes running a home office or medical equipment need more headroom. Use our sizing calculator for a transparent estimate, then confirm with an installer survey.

What is the most reliable home generator brand?

Reliability depends more on correct sizing, professional RECI-registered installation and annual servicing than on the badge. Several long-established brands are commonly installed in Ireland - Generac, Kohler (Rehlko), Pramac and FG Wilson in the installed class, and Honda among portables - but we do not rank brands. Ask installers which brands they service locally, because parts and service coverage is what keeps a unit reliable.

Are there grants for home generators in Ireland?

No. There is no SEAI grant for standby or portable home generators - SEAI schemes cover heat pumps, insulation, solar PV and similar upgrades, not backup power plant. Budget for the full installed cost, and be wary of any marketing that implies grant support.
